The Red Hen – Eat your heart out Italy

A friend and I were grabbing drinks one day and decided we needed something to soak up the alcohol… I mean, have a nice dinner. I was complaining about how DC does not have decent Italian food when my friend grabbed my arm and said with a sense of urgency that we HAD to go to the Red Hen. Therefore, I obliged.

The Red Hen is on the outskirts of DC towards the Maryland side of the city.  When I walked in, it was an intimate restaurant that is well-lit by the activity going on in the open kitchen. Looking at the menu it was very short and simple, much like menus that I have seen in Italy. We started off with a chicken liver mousse that I still dream about to this day. Normally, I am not a fan of liver mousse, but this was so light and delicious that I wanted to just eat it all night.  I might have licked the dish and no, I regret nothing. We followed it up with homemade rigatoni and fennel sausage.  Needless to say, we were stuffed. I couldn’t even consider dessert, even though they looked so good.

The service was phenomenal and the prices were reasonable. My friend told me that her and her husband moved into their house because it is down the street from the Red Hen. Now, I definitely see why!
