The amusingly named Woodward Takeout Food (WTF) is the to-go branch of Woodward Table, a fancy downtown restaurant. WTF offers sandwiches and salads in a small space, and while it’s a little more pricey than most sandwich spots, it’s fantastic.
I love the Merguez sausage sandwich, which is probably my favorite sandwich in the city. It’s got spicy sausage with a snap, grilled broccoli rabe, spicy harissa aioli, arugula, cilantro and roasted red peppers. The homemade Italian bread is delicious too. The Chick Chick is another of their mainstays, a big hunk of fried chicken on another delicious bun with pickles, cranberry relish, good bacon, lettuce and mayo – it’s so good. I also liked the cauliflower gyro with a delicious house-made pita (though beware, your hands may smell like gyro for hours.)
It isn’t fast, which is a good sign since they make everything fresh, and the space can be noisy, but there are some tables towards the back and outside. Or get it to go and visit a nearby park.
I also really enjoyed the homemade potato chips made of big, crispy slices of potato – but be warned, a sandwich and chips can make two meals. They have breakfast too, and I have yet to try the ice cream (cannoli popsicles!) or shakes, but look forward to it.
Probably my favorite lunch spot in the city, it’s also convenient to lots of things downtown. Worth a visit if you’re anywhere nearby. They’re only open on weekdays, however.
