Not many places in Zagreb live rock’n'roll, but this cannot be said of Route 66. Situated in a small shack being the national library, it’s a small and cozy place for all rockers and rollers to enjoy. Beware, there’s no website or info about it, so if you’re interested in the program, the best thing is to go there directly and see what’s happening.

Thursdays is usually „Country night”, Fridays „Friday fever”, „Rock Saturday” and the melancholic blues Sunday. Bands are different every week in a very cozy and laid back atmosphere, you just might stumble upon a TV host of a scientific show playing away with his rock’n'roll band or you’ll be able to choose your own track on the jukebox.

There’s also table football, pool (what kind of a rock club would it be without pool?) and if you get hungry you can always order a lice of pizza or a hot dog. Although it’s mostly a night club, it’s open during the day, with a wonderful summer garden where you can chill with a beer in the shade of trees or on rainy days comfortably sit in the „living-room” with a coffee at a student price of 4 kn.

So if you’re a rocker deep down, there’s no reason to miss Route 66, even if it’s „just” the one in Zagreb.

One of the first memories I have of the Lisinski concert hall are of its chandeliers. For the first five years of my life I lived across the street from Lisinski, and I’d go in quite often to play – back then the words concert hall didn’t mean too much to me, it was a big interesting building with gorgeous chandeliers and many many secret corners to discover.

This wasn’t too difficult to do since back then on Sundays there were puppet shows and concerts for kids where my parents would always take me, but I preferred to sneak out and go wander around the building itself.

Not to mention Lisinski was the place of my first dance performance when I was 7, so indeed it holds a special place. These days however, I have to admit I’ve become an adult, so my visits to Lisinski are more serious – everything from the live broadcasts from the Metropolitan on Saturdays, to concerts ranging from the Zagreb symphonic orchestra to Nick Cave to Jazz concerts – Lisinski concert hall has one of the most interesting music repertoires in Zagreb, a bit expensive sometimes but well worth the visit.

Even just for the architecture (maybe those childhood memories left a trace, but I have a weak spot for socialist-realist architecture) or the chandeliers.

Located underneath the modernist architecture masterpiece of National  and University Library SPUNK is throughout the day swarming with students making a break in their studying, hitting on the opposite (or same) sex or just letting the arduously acquired knowledge set in its place.

The setting then changes with the sunset, with a brief interval of vacuum, after the students had left and the vampires had not yet arrived. And when I say vampires, I actually mean normal people that enjoy pop/rock/indie music (vampires just sounded cool).

Though the programme is difficult to obtain since they do not have a website, you can check at their FB page, email (spunk.zagrebMONKEYgmail.com) or by calling. Typical events are movie screenings and concerts of uprising bands whose members you can usually meet there even if they’re not playing that night. Great place to hang out and meet people which have a lot to say.

If you’re looking for a place where you can have a drink during the day and dance to some good music at night, check out the Boogaloo Club.

More than once I’ve seen this place half-empty during day hours; you’ll probably find a few groups of students, as the club is situated between a couple of colleges. However, in the evening it quickly gets packed with people, especially on concert nights. If there’s a tribute band having a gig in Zagreb, most likely it’ll take place here. There have been music tributes to famous Croatian bands, but also the widely popular musicians and bands as Guns ‘n’ Roses, Nirvana, The Doors, Bob Marley…

Even if you’re not into the whole tribute thing, Boogaloo won’t let you down – you could get a chance to listen to well-known rock and metal bands, let yourself go a little crazy on disco nights and dance to techno/electro music until the early morning hours. No chance you’ll be disappointed – this club is a place worth visiting.
