Cinema Europa Zagreb (by Kristina Petrekovic)

Cinema “Europa” is sort of a left over from the era before multiplex cinemas inside shopping malls. Back then Zagreb had “little” cinemas all over the town and Europa was among the most beautiful ones. Today it can still proudly wear that epithet and that’s not where the story about Europa ends.

Nowadays this cinema is a place where you can enjoy many film festival like the Human Rights Film Festival, Queer Zagreb, Subversive Film Festival, Animafest or Jewish Film Festival. More than any other cinema it is open to movies produced in Croatia.

Locals love this city centre cinema so much that, when it was supposed to get shut down, they started a petition and other initiatives in order to stop that from happening. Fortunately, they were successful in their actions, so today Zagreb still has a cinema with personality, history and reputation. It is much more that just a hall with a big white screen.
