This is one place where travellers will hardly ever stumble upon accidentally. At least in my opinion, because I imagine visiting shopping malls is not very high on travellers’ lists of priorities. But there is one shopping mall in Zagreb which is worthwhile visiting on Wednesdays, because from 16:00 – 21:00 a delightful market of homemade food known as Mali plac (“Little market”) is held in the hall of Branimir shopping mall.
They have been promoting local and traditional food growing methods already for four years. It used to change location from week to week, but already for a while it’s been held in Branimir centar – not the cosiest ambience, but the delicious food compensates for the rather dull atmosphere of the mall.
At Mali plac you can buy organic groceries, all kinds of creative homemade foods, both sweet and salty, as well as some natural cosmetics, all made by small producers and enthusiasts. This creative homemade food includes goodies you can’t normally find in shops, like raw vegan cakes, kale chips, different kinds of ghee, Ayurvedic tea, natural syrups, interesting bakery products, unusual spice mixes…
On most stands you can try a bit of everything and sellers are always enthusiastic to explain what is what, how it is made, and why it’s good for your health. What I enjoy the most is buying some tasty snacks at the market and making a picnic on the lawn of the nearby King Tomislav Square or Zrinjevac.
