This space is also known as ‘The China Gardens’, named after the beautiful China-inspired buildings which frame the meadow on one side. They were a gift from Zurich’s twin city of Kunming, as a thank you for helping them with their water supplies and drainage. They create a beautiful backdrop to Blatterwiese meadow.
Since I first arrived in Zurich, ten years ago, this has been the place I’ve gathered in summer with large groups of friends. We bring our cool boxes, barbecues, footballs and frisbees. There seems to be unlimited space, so my pal’s kids can run wild and there are plenty of places to jump in for a refreshing swim along the lake.
I love the relaxed atmosphere of the China Gardens combined with the organisation. The toilets are spotless, they have communal grills that can be fired up at a moment’s notice and there’s even a Chinese takeaway poking out of the buildings at one end. I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be on a summer’s day.
