I have always been a fan of gin, for as long as I’ve been old enough to consume alcohol, possibly from before, but I shouldn’t be divulging my former illegal habits here, really.
A few summers ago I discovered a wonderful gin bar in Bilbao, Spain, and had been lamenting the fact that Zurich was lacking an equivalent. If the bar in Bilbao is what one might call the Mecca of gin, then Dante Bar is where I will go to worship the liquid until I can make my next pilgrimage to the Basque country.
One thing Dante Bar does much better though, is the atmosphere. Another thing I had been lamenting was the lack of nice, cosy, dingey bars. You know the ones you read about in American novels based in the 50s, think Raymond Chandler. Well, now we have one.
Unlike the seedy characters Chandler’s Marlowe would encounter in his local bar, Dante is the gathering place for the cool kids of Zurich. I want to avoid using the word “hipster” but, in truth, it’s the best word with which to describe the people you’ll rub shoulders with here. Quirky glasses and cable knit sweaters are by no means a must, but trying a gin you’ve never heard of before certainly is, if you ask me.
