La Catrina – Arrrrrriba

La Catrina calls itself the first real Mexican bar in Zurich although you won’t find any sombreros and ponchos. It’s a tiny place but every Tuesday abd Thursday manages to squeeze in a band. The acts vary from local bands to international gems and the best, entry is for free.
I came across La Catrina because [...]

Funny Laundry at Mascotte – Start with a chuckle

Guy Stevens’ Funny Laundry brings English speaking stand-up comedians from around the world to Switzerland. Every fortnight, selected comedians take the stage at Mascotte. It’s a great way to start the night with a chuckle and in contrast to other performances in Zurich, this evening is all in English.
You find a review about the venue [...]

Acapulco – Relax amidst hecticness

I like Acapulco and I’m there regularly, mostly during the week. If the weather is nice enough it’s best to catch a seat outside so you can watch the passers-by. There is a lot going on at that corner. Inside, the sofa seats are so comfortable that you’re likely to stay much longer than you [...]

Restaurant Aargauerhof – For “Züri Geschnetzeltes”

Best place to eat „Zürcher Geschnetzeltes mit Rösti” (Meat cut into strips with creamy sauce and chrunchy cut up potatoes). This dish IS Zürich. Everyone loves it. Everyone! Even vegetarians make an exception. Don’t dare leaving without having tried it. Preferably at the Aargauerhof.
It’s cheaper here than in most other places, but the Rösti is [...]

Hot Pasta – The Pasteria Italiana

When all the Italians came over to Switzerland in the 50s, we Swiss were very afraid of the spirited folk (the Swiss are always afraid!). With time, we fell in love with them and their pasta though.
But of course, because we are Swiss and tend to traditionalism, we wanted to have the pasta our own [...]

BlamBlamBlam – Urban Gallery

A crazy place full of crazy art and crazy people. It is not a usual white-walled gallery decorated with a few precisely placed pictures. It isn’t a place where you sip white wine, wear huge nerd glasses and hold pompous conversations in an overly civilized atmosphere with super stylish people that call themselves artists.
This gallery [...]

Steps #12 – Dance Festival

An international dance festival featuring crews from all over the world: Brazil, Belgium, Switzerland, Great Britain, South Africa, Holland, USA, Israel, Germany. They are all doing contemporary dance but interpreted very differently. There’s an incredible spectrum of forms and styles !
The shows are all over Switzerland, in different cities and locations and often they are [...]

Museum Rietberg – Also for art philistines

A museum full of beautiful art from Asia, Africa, America and Oceania, covering super interesting themes. Themes that won’t only (but also!) fascinate the art lovers and connoisseurs amongst you.
Currently there’s for example an exhibition on indulgence and intoxication, showing crazy, colorful paintings of nicely dressed Indians going wild while smoking drugs or being chased [...]

EXILENCE – at Exil

Exil is the club to go crazy at these days. Being from Zurich, you can’t truly call yourself hip if you haven’t had a minimum of one wild night at the Exil or at least pretend to have had one. Being in there, feels like being underground. Kind of like being in one of those [...]

Gloria – Bar and Restaurant

Somehow, and I am unsure why, this is a wonderful place. Apart from the round windows, there is nothing special about it. You feel a little like in a canteen from the 70s (lots of orange!) with better lighting. The couch in the corner, which you should pounce at immediately if it’s free, is quite [...]
