No one likes Mondays. They always arrive too early, they are quiet and melancholic. But, not every Monday morning needs to be hard. Especially if shielded by the smell of a warm chocolate croissant and a cup of freshly brewed coffee. The Gnädinger bakery is my loyal ally against those early week blues.
The Gnädinger in Schaffhauserplatz is one of those cute neighbourhood spots only those who live nearby know about. It competes passive-aggressively with the Starbucks across the street. It’s not as trendy or young, but rather old-school and Swiss. They have character and above everything, the trust of their local clientele.
Savoury pastries filled with rich fillings like meat and leek; mushrooms and sweet onions; or cheesy bread baked with vegetables are among some of the treats you can enjoy on the go or at the bakery. Also, the variety of bread they offer confirms their baking expertise. My favourite is their Schaffhauser bread. A rich whole wheat bread that goes well for breakfast, lunch or even just as a quick snack.
It’s also a lifesaver if baking is not one of your talents and you need a dessert or some canapes to take to a friend’s, or just for your own in-house pleasure.
I might never get used to Mondays or early mornings, but that first bite into my croissant and that nutty sip of coffee as I await my tram ride, with a little imagination can taste like Saturday.
