Remaining true to its roots, this former squat has been run as a cooperative for many years now. While Total Bar has retained a decidedly alternative edge and is popular with people fitting this description, even bankers in suits will probably be tolerated these days – albeit I’ve yet to see one in there, mind.
Apart from a lively past, this small watering hole with its unassuming front offers a convenient location just off Langstrasse, a relaxed atmosphere and decent drinks selection. You can borrow board games or read the paper while sipping a local beer.
It’s worth paying attention to the small decorative quirks at Total Bar: for example, the loos are equipped with old railway fittings – great! The wooden bench and mirror monstrosity they’ve furnished the main room with a while ago reminds me of an old-fashioned train station buffet – not so great! Another great thing: the many posters and flyers plastered to the walls tell you everything you need to know about what is going on elsewhere in Zurich. However, chances are you won’t be in too much of a hurry to leave Total Bar.
