Zurich is not a bread averse city. In fact, I think the athleticism of the average Swiss person is based firmly on their affinity for carb-loading. Turn any corner and you’ll find a cute, family run bakery. It doesn’t get much cuter or quaint than the literal hole in the wall that is Vohdin, though.
I understand it’s run by a husband-and-wife team with Mrs. Vohdin running the shop front. Have any of you seen Studio Ghibli’s Kiki’s Delivery Service? Mrs. Vohdin reminds me, very fondly, of the baker’s wife in the film. I look forward to her warm smile just as much as I do the to-die-for freshly baked cheese tarts. I’m a savoury breakfast person, so an assortment of quiches always gets my heart fluttering…meaning I might as well be dating this bakery!
If you’re in the Bellevue area and fancy giving the old town a little perusal, stop off at this little gem to energise yourself and walk up towards the Niederdorf. If my description isn’t enough to get you to carry yourself over there, then surely the queue in my picture is enough to prove the Vohdins’ baking skills. Don’t worry, Mrs. Vohdin is nothing but efficient, the queue is there to show her popularity, not to deter you.
