The Amsterdam Light Festival 2019 is about to begin – this extremely popular arts festival takes place along the stunningly beautiful canals of Amsterdam’s historic centre and has grown year-on-year since it’s conception in 2012.
The ALF is one of the world’s most innovative and fascinating exhibitions of contemporary art and is a truly unique opportunity to see some incredible light art illuminated against the backdrop of 17th century canals in the city’s iconic canal belt.
This year’s Amsterdam light festival (which takes place from 28/11/19 till 19/01/20) is based around the theme, ‘Disrupt!’, and promises to be thought provoking and inspiring as well as stunningly beautiful. There will be 25 art works and 10 different city stories along this year’s route which will take in the following; from the start point at Oosterdok, the route will go past Oudeschans, up the river Amstel, along the Nieuwe Keizersgracht and Plantage Muidergracht before ending at the Entrepotdok. This completely new route for 2019/20 will show the best of the city centre’s beautiful eastern waterways.

Although it is possible to see many of the exhibitions from the canal side, the best way is to get on a boat and make a real evening of it – complete with a festive glass of glühwein! For the next couple of months thousands of people will be taking to the water to enjoy everything that this fantastic festival has to offer and enjoying one of the year’s cultural highlights!
The Amsterdam Light festival 2019 is always a great event and provides a spark of magic during the long, dark nights of the winter months. It’s a perfect opportunity to soak in some of Amsterdam’s internationally-renowned contemporary arts culture and is fun and interesting for everyone from young children to art-enthusiasts.
From the 28th Nov 2019 till 19th Jan 2020, the art installations will be illuminated daily from 1700 – 2300 – if you’re lucky enough to be in Amsterdam during this period, be sure to get on a boat, get festive and enjoy the inspiring and thought-provoking instillations from some of the world’s most renowned artists against the equally incredible backdrop of our beautiful city.
