To be perfectly honest, it took me way too long to visit this museum which can be found at a very central place in Amsterdam, near the main shopping district. Nonetheless, it is a perfect place to get more information about the origin, development and background of the city in general but also some of its important attractions or personalities.
The museum houses a permanent exhibition called the ‘DNA of Amsterdam’ which tells you every single detail about the history of ‘Mokum’ (another name for Amsterdam) and its inhabitants. Next to that, there are one or two changing exhibitions on a particular theme connected to its development. I visited one about significant Dutch women and the anniversary of the magazine ‘Margriet’ (a popular magazine for older women), which were both very nice and interesting.
The museum is located in a beautiful historical building with an exquisite courtyard (free of charge, which you can visit if you turn in one of the sidelines of the Kalverstraat — the main shopping street).
