Cities are warmer than rural areas, yet there are fewer places to cool down. And throughout Amsterdam, you will see people seeking ways to cool down. Kids and dogs run through fountains, lots of cold beverages are consumed and urban beaches have been popping up over the last couple of years. My favorite spot is less obvious: the banks of the river IJ, outside the restaurant ‘Hotel de Goudfazant’.
The banks are 2 meters (6/7 feet) from the water surface and made of metal panels. Along the bank, Monk, FC Hyena and De Goudfazant have set up terraces, but there are also some benches made of large wooden logs. With hot weather, the water in the river will sparkle in the sun and invite you to take a dive, and that is exactly what you should do!
Getting out of the water – not an unimportant detail – can be done via a ladder and it is advisable to stay near the banks so as not to get in the way of boats. But the feeling plunging into the river IJ and after that airdrying while lying down on one of the wooden beams is great.
And of course, do not forget to get a cold drink at the Goudfazant and have these drinks over a game of chess or jeu de boules. For the latter, there is a court located near the banks.
