If you feel like leaving the hectic city behind for a bit, take a hike to a very special place called ‘Ons Genoegen’ (‘our pleasure’ in Dutch). This local farmcafé is hidden in the outskirts of Amsterdam – and don’t let this demotivate you – it’s very much worth the beautiful walk getting there. You might even run into a fox or other city wildlife.
The farm, run by volunteers, is a multi faceted place to get together, eat, listen to some live music and many more activities (check the agenda). There are sheep you can adopt if you like, and in the summertime there is an outdoor cinema playing classics. And in wintertime you can cozy down by the campfires with a hot beverage and a blanket.
Inside the welcoming restaurant you can join for an extremely affordable three-course meal every day of the week (make sure to reserve a spot because it can get full quickly). On the farm grounds, next to the restaurant, there is a peculiar little ‘give-away shop’ where you can browse around for things. In the shop your money has no worth; everything’s free. The give-away shop is part of a bigger idea, creating awareness on our role in mass consumerism and materialism – I love to browse around here and bring or take a book from time to time.
