Anyone who has watched the famous TV series Cheers wants to have a Cheers bar of their own. Well, this is my Cheers bar. Cafe Gruter is a local bar on Amsterdam’s Willemsparkweg, relaxed and easygoing. One of my favorites.
Most of the time it’s populated by all sorts of people but the locals keep up the spirits in this bar. The regulars can be found here at the bar and when the weather is good on the fine terrace. There is Fred, the teacher at the University who is waiting for me since I am always late. Or Albert, who is always in for a drink and a chat with Fred. Or Wim, who drinks his white wine, smokes his cigarette outside and enjoys his paintings which no one else does.
Hille is the best bartender of the pack. When Hille is not around, you can easily wait for 10 minutes for a beer when sitting outside.
Traffic can be slow on weekdays but from Wednesdays onwards this place can be crowded. Especially when the sun is out, the terrace is busy. We don’t mind the real estate guys, the lawyers and bankers, they are like flies, eventually they will leave. The main Dutch soccer matches and international Rugby matches can be watched here for free, drinks are obligatory. And we don’t forget to order the Van Dobbe bitterballen. Beer and bitterballen, the ideal combination! Gruter also serves good barfood, the chicken sateh with fries and the Burger are recommended!
