Amsterdam is full of parks but one of the best-kept secrets might be the Gaasperplas. This lake is in the southeast of Amsterdam and is not really well-known and popular with locals from the city center — undeservingly so.
I got to know the Gaasperplas when I lived in Amsterdam Southeast and it became a part of my run. One lap around the lake is about 4.5 kilometers and I would either run one or two depending on the time available.
The nice thing about the Gaasperplas is that it’s really easy to reach with public transport by taking subway line 53 till the end-station Gaasperplas. From there it is a short walk to the beginning of the lake but you will have to travel a little bit further to get to the sand beaches on the other side.
In the summer, when BBQ weather is there, it is definitely worthwhile to extend your stay at the beach of Gaasperplas till dinnertime. Families from Amsterdam Southeast will fire up their BBQs and some of the best Surinamese and African BBQ smells will fill the air accompanied by music and dance this will create an atmosphere found nowhere else in Amsterdam.
