In the North of Amsterdam, just a stone’s throw away from the small ferry, you will find Hangar – the place I go to when I need some pampering and luxury. Hangar is a welcoming restaurant with an atmosphere I can only describe as effortlessly beautiful. I can’t quite explain it, you’ll have to experience it. With a cold beer and a platter of crudité I sit down in a bean bag chair. When I look up I see palm trees waving. On the terrace, the sun is ever-present, accompanied by a perfect summer breeze. The view of the bustling city in the distance, the boats slowly passing by; it creates a sense of awayness. Hangar truly feels like an oasis, a very relaxed place to quench your thirst.
In the colder months I mostly visit the restaurant for dinner, which is an equally scrumptious experience. What really struck me (aside from the good food) the way the tables were arranged in the space and the fine acoustics inside of Hangar: you can actually have a conversation without needing to raise your voice, and even when it is very crowded it will never feel crammed. It is something I really miss in a lot of restaurants, but Hangar nails it perfectly. The oysters, the asparagus soup, the steak bavette, the cheesecake and chocolate ganache are my favorites (so yes, everything I tried is my favorite).
