There is a large group of Surinamese people in Amsterdam. The country of Suriname used to be a Dutch colony. Luckily, they became independent in 1975. Many Surinamese people moved to the Netherlands and started their lives here. This is why, you can get a lot of good Surinamese food here nowadays.
There are many places where you can get Surinamese food, some are good, and some are bad. The key is to know where to go. And where to go is to Gieta! Rotishop Gieta is a small takeout spot, where you can get the best food. To be clear: you can't sit here to eat your food, it is takeout only! The Rotishop is owned by Gieta. Gieta is the kindest Surinamese lady you will ever meet. She makes the best Roti. Roti is a mix of potatoes, green beans, and chicken/tempé that you roll into a pancake. It may sound strange but it is amazing!
My grandfather lives 2.5 hour drive away but he has a special bond with Gieta. Always when he visits us, he goes to visit Gieta to have a chat and buy Roti of course! I hope you enjoy meeting Gieta and eating Roti as much as my dear grandfather does.
