I’ve lived in Amsterdam for a while now. I think I know my way around, know the streets, the nice neighbourhoods and I almost never get lost. But, I’ve moved recently and discovered a area that I never knew existed. I felt like I was on holiday in my own city! It was the Spaarndammerbuurt.
Now before you all get really excited, it’s not a cauldron filled with gold at the end of the rainbow. Looking at the map of Amsterdam it’s to the left, above the Westerpark and left of the Central Station. It’s a neighbourhood that not a lot of people talk about because not a lot is known about it. But more and more people hear about it and more nice spots are opening up in the Spaarndammerstraat (the main street).
Walking around here felt like a holiday for me. New streets, new shops, new cafes and all near the water. This is the area closest to the Amsterdam Harbour. Now, this is not a really romantic sights since it mostly contains really big ships and factories. But right here, on the edge of these sights, are a couple of streets waiting to be discovered. Don’t expect big shopping streets but nice, calm and quiet residential streets with kids playing around, elderly people doing their grocery shopping and twentysomethings drinking a beer in one of the cafes. If you feel like it, join any of them and sit back, and relax.
