In one of my favourite streets, the Haarlemmerdijk, you can find the oldest cinema of Amsterdam called The Movies. Although it is newly renovated, you will feel like you stepped in a time machine as soon as you walk through the doors of this theatre. It’s not just small style elements of history that stayed intact here and there: no, in The Movies you are almost fully immersed in Art Deco ambiance – if it weren’t for the obligatory emergency exit signs above the doors you would probably actually believe you went back in time.
This cinema, which has been around since 1912, shows some of the newer Hollywood films, as well as some Art House and World Cinema. And of course, there is food. The Asian-inspired restaurant located in the same building is perfect for a date or when you want to ‘make an evening of it’ with a full three course meal before the film (small snacks are also possible, but I recommend a dinner, as the food is good!) The Rendang Daging is my favourite thing on the menu and the desserts are ALL exquisite.
