When I decided to come to Amsterdam to study, I started fantasising about what kind of neighbourhood I would live in, what kind of room it would be and who my flatmates would be. In my fantasy I would live near the Vondelpark, in a nice, big room on the top floor with a window overlooking the park. Unfortunately, this remained a fantasy.
Instead, my room was located 15 minutes from the park, with 3 of my best friends in a fairly new area of Amsterdam. It turned out to be a great place and I had the time of my life but every time I am near the Vondelpark I can’t help but wonder how it could be.
On the left side of the park is the Van Eeghenlaan and the Van Eeghenstraat which are filled with the villas of my fantasy. Grande, huge, beautiful and really expensive. Walking around these streets are sure to work on your fantasy as well. Though most of the villas are now offices, the thought of these mansions once housing the rich of Amsterdam is mesmerizing. When walking around, be sure to take a turn in the Cornelis Schuytstraat, a street filled with (expensive) shops and cafes, perfect for a cup of coffee or some window shopping. Or, contemplate about life in the Obrechtchurch.
Though still a fantasy, the Van Eeghenstraat is a great street to think about what might have been. And maybe, also appreciate what you have now.
