Looking for biodynamic, healthy groceries in a sound environment? Well, in Amsterdam-Zuid I visit The Zuidermarkt, where some local producers have set up a marketplace with biodynamic and sustainable food and products and mingle with the locals. I find the setting relaxed and easygoing.
In the morning and around lunchtime the elderly people of the neighbourhood do their shopping and meet up for a coffee at the open air meeting place. Around lunchtime and in the afternoon the bottles of wine are opened and there can be some wine tasting to add to the experience.
Meanwhile, the young urban professionals are busy with their children at the local soccer and hockey clubs in the morning. We will meet at the Zuidermarkt in the afternoon to add some responsible biodynamic products to our shopping bags from the big retailers and catch up with friends and hear the latest gossips. Volunteers are serving us at the vegetables stand and most products come from farmers around Amsterdam. Depending on the season, the variety of products may differ of course.
There is a grand variety of products available. There are two bakeries with excellent bread in every variety, a butcher, fresh fish, olives & nuts, takeaway coffee, vitamin drinks, smoothies, delicious crepes prepared on the spot, Greek olive oil, vegetables of all sorts and wines. And visit the cheesemaker of Kobunder! My favourite hang-out is Brandt & Levie, an Amsterdam-based sausage maker. Try the one with black pepper! Tasty… and only on Saturdays!
