Is it a wine bar? A bistro? A breakfast spot? A restaurant? Bohm & Berkel is all that and much more. It is located at Antwerp’s most intriguing squares, the Hendrik Consienceplein as we call it. It is locked between a famous heritage library and the baroque St Carolus Borromeus church and is one of my favorite bistros in town.
Bohm & Berkel is the perfect place to start off the day with a plate of filling breakfast, to continue the afternoon with a good glass of wine and to end the evening as if you were in a Parisian bistro. That was the feeling I got when I first walked in. Owner Ernst explained to me that the sofas are from Bordeaux and that he found the bar in Les Halles in Paris. He also told me that legendary rock band Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix once performed here before they turned it into a bistro and it was called the ‘Pannenhuis’.
On the menu you’ll find an interesting variety of brasserie dishes but with a Mediterranean twist. Last time I was there, I went for the mackerel rillette and toast, a can of sardines and the Poulet Citron, the latter being a very tasty stew of chicken, lemon, fennel, turmeric and oven baked potatoes. Finger licking good! I was also surprised by the vegetarian options on the menu, like a Melanza alla Parmigiana. I’m already thinking about what to order next time I come around. Hmm!
