This hidden gem is hiding in a narrow street and is one of my favourite places to enjoy a homemade cake with a coffee, like I would have enjoyed it at my grandmother’s home. It’s all made with care and the prices are very democratic.
In a way it is also a place of contradictions, because although this spot is in the old centre, close to many famous sights and other spots (like Vlaeykesgang, Hoogstraat, etcetera), it is not easy to find and you will surely not bump into it by accident.
It has large windows, but there is barely any natural light. It looks kind of big on the outside, but in reality this is a small, romantic, cosy spot. And maybe that is the reason why it is so special.
They have different kinds of coffee and tea to choose from, but generally I order a ‘Graankoffie’ (Cereal coffee?). All drinks come with an extra, like sweets, fresh (!!) whipped cream or cookies. If possible, try to sit upstairs to have even more privacy and to feel as if you are in your own romantic bubble.
And the best thing is: It is opened until the evening. Therefore I like to skip desert at the restaurant sometimes and end the day with an ‘appelstrudel’ or ‘javanais’ at “De Lantaren”.
