This bakery calls itself ‘Royal Deliveryman of Saint – Nicolas’. Saint – Nicolas is the Dutch equivalent of Santa. He delivers toys, chocolate, cookies and tangerines every 6th of December to all kids who behaved during the past year.
They have a big window-statue that changes every two months and is made entirely of cookie dough.
My boyfriend (who is an even bigger addict than I am) asks for cookies from this bakery for his birthday. And Christmas. And Easter. And because he did some vacuum cleaning. Or the dishes. Our favourite cookies? ‘Amandelspeculaas‘ for him and ‘Moriaantjes‘ for me. The first is a rather large, soft biscuit made of almonds, ginger and dark caster sugar. I have no idea what’s in a ‘Moriaantje’ but they’re tiny, crunchy and sweet so that’ll do it for me :). There’s a bigger choice beside those 2 cookies, like ‘Antwerp Hands’, ‘butter dessert’, ‘palmiers’ and more…
My advice: Avoid this shop during the Christmas holidays and Valentine’s day. Busy, busy, busy.
Advice n°2: Decide what you want and buy the double amount. The first batch probably won’t survive the walk back to your hotel.
