Walrus en Vlinder is a toy store where I like to come and hang around for a while when I’m looking for a present for kids. The range of original and sustainable toys is quite unique. From the most beautiful picture books, to the most original party games to the finest dolls and jewels.
Their tagline on the website is: arts, crafts and toys for kids and people who keep on playing. And that is not a lie. They want to welcome children (and adults like me) into a world of playfully discovering things and all in a creative, sustainable but also imaginative way.
There is something for everyone at Walrus en Vlinder. Think classic books from Astrid Lindgren but also costumes for a Halloween party. A make your own music box kit sits next to a stack of colorful hair mascara. The cutest collection on the shelves? That must be the Maileg mouse and rabbit figurines. It is a world in which matchboxes can be beds for mice and princesses make perfect teatime companions.
Last time I was there, my eye fell on an Indonesian board game. I went outside with a pattern book to make kites from exotic bird prints and an ingenious marble trail with obstacles. You know, the type of toy that your son, grandchild or baby-girl will love for hours on end. Ipad? Youtube? What do you mean, “digital generation?”
