9th Athens Open Air Film Festival – Jun 5 – Aug 28

If there’s something Greeks everywhere can agree on (yes, amazing, I know!) it’s that almost nothing can beat enjoying a film outdoors on a warm summer night. Bonus points if it’s for free.

The Athens Open Air Film Festival is here for its ninth iteration of their successful free-cinema-in-unexpected-locations series of projections. Each film is screened at another location; it could be well-known, symbolic, related to the film or a place seemingly chosen at complete random, but for each film, the place chosen is typically almost as important as the film played.

I remember watching the original Friday the 13th in 2012 in a basketball court in Petralona. I’m only guessing here, but I think the only reason they chose to play that film is because the date was actually Friday, July 13th, 2012.

Reminder: in Greece we (almost) always subtitle movies, which means you should either be able to read Greek or understand the original language to get the most out of the movie.
