Vox Cinema – Special open-air cinema in Exarcheia

The truth is that I had passed outside VOX cinema hundreds of times in my life, but as I am always in a hurry, I had never visited it… until a few days ago, when a friend from Mexico came and we decided to show her what an open air cinema is like. And after my first visit at Vox, I promised myself that I would go more often!

What is special about Vox?

First: it’s located on a roof.  That means that while you are watching your movie you are surrounded by “polykatoikies”. If you don’t know what a polykatoikia is, they are apartment buildings with a special architecture from the ’50s and you mostly see them in Athens and cities of the East like Beirut, Istanbul etc. So while watching a movie, you can also see the ordinary life of people living around you watering their flowers, taking a look at the movie from their balconies & other scenes of daily life.

The second is its location! Vox is at the very center of Exarcheia. You will not find this area in the touristic guides, as it is considered the “anarchist area”. The truth is that lately Exarcheia has become a very dirty place, but it still remains charming & special with all the political movement happening on its streets.

Τhe third is the selection of the movies! Classical, special and for sure worth watching.

PS: Mondays & Tuesdays tickets cost 5€; Thursdays 2-for-1 for 8€.
