Aiolou is my favorite pedestrian area of the city. Its architecture reminds me of New York and it joins the “Tower of Winds” with Omonoia Square. One more reason I like Aiolou is that one of my favorite restaurant is located there – Mama Roux!
Its cozy decoration meets ethnic food, while nice smooth music is playing in the background. Mama Roux is open from early in the morning for your coffee until late at night for your dinner.
The food that is served is exotic, from Αrabic specialties to Japanese noodles and American burgers. But for me the tastiest food you must try is called “moutabal”. It is a recipe from Syria – melted, smoked eggplants with minced meat and almonds. It also comes without meat as a vegan option. Mama Roux is also vegetarian-friendly. You can choose among its different salads – my dearest one is “Fatous” that is served with a very special cheese also from Syria.
After your lunch do not miss a taste of their delicious sweets especially the “creme brulee” or “cheesecake”. A few weeks ago Mama Roux started a new event : every Sunday you can enjoy your brunch while listening to jazz live music – a feeling from New Orleans at the pedestrian area of Aiolou!
After all these years Mama roux is like home for me. My best friend Zak is working there so it is the place where we meet for a quick coffee and small talk!
