Having lived in Piraeus, the port of Athens, my whole life, I was mostly going to fish restaurants next to the sea in my neighbourhood. So when I discovered that on the streets behind the port there was a Thai restaurant I felt really happy, as I love ethnic gastronomy and especially Asian cuisine.
Walking down Notara street at the “Troumpa” area you will find Rouan Thai among other ethnic restaurants. Its decoration is really simple – posters with famous Thai people on the wall and an ’80s atmosphere all over the place. The food is good. Do not miss tasting their soup, especially the one with coconut milk, mushrooms and bamboo. The menu has a variety of dishes, mostly noodles, rice but also fish food like Thai giga shrimps or squid. At the end, a fortune cookie will give you a sign for your future!
The neighbourhood of Troumpa is charming and has lot of history. It used to be the “infamous” part of Piraeus where all their sailors used to spend their time at their disembarkation from their boats. Lots of Greek songs refer to it and a few movies were filmed on Troumpa’s streets .
Nowadays is not infamous anymore, but it’s still charming if you lose yourself in the streets!
