“Saligaros” means “snail” in Greek. Don’t get the name wrong: the service is not slow at all! Snails are maybe the most “trademark” Cretan dish and I believe that’s where the inspiration came from.
If you want to try a variety of Cretan & Greek dishes with local ingredients at normal prices and a good shot of raki, that’s the place to be!
Located a few blocks away from Exarcheia square, Saligaros is kind of a hidden gem. I have tried many different plates here and nothing has ever disappointed me. On the contrary, I am always delightfully surprised! Some of my favorites are the hot potato salad with syglino (a Greek type of ham), the tabbouleh salad and the vegetables “tart”, which you can see on the image above!
There is a great variety of vegetarian plates but also deliciously made veal liver and lamb burger, for the meat lovers. There is also a choice of cheese and cured meat products from all around Greece and plates with very specific Greek ingredients such as kavourmas (veal) and amanites. And of course, “hohlioi boubouristoi”, snails sautéed with rosemary and vinegar, the Cretan way – some of the best I have had in Athens!
On top of all that, on Sunday afternoons there might be live music!
There is one last thing I have to say. Saligaros is the place with the following breakfast option: “Greek Breakfast: frappe coffee, cigarette & aspirin – €2”. I rest my case!
