Just to be clear, I am not a vegetarian. One day, auntie K wrote to say she would visit Barcelona, so I quickly had to get with the programme and find a place where she could eat.
Auntie K is a strict vegetarian and she cannot countenance being in close proximity to meat products. Thankfully, I had noticed Aguaribay on my walks around the neighbourhood and, urged by necessity, booked a table there for dinner.
I don’t mind vegetarian food, although my experience of that cuisine has been disappointingly bland but Aguaribay turned out to be a complete revelation. The menu is made up of delicious fusion dishes that include Italian classics like lasagne and Asian staples such as curry. The appropriately named Nachos Wow are frankly heavenly. The day’s specials are chalked up on a board and are worth exploring. If necessary, ask for advice from the attentive staff, the dishes are always interesting.
I also like their selection of craft beers, some brewed locally just a few streets away, and the good organic wines they stock. Special mention must be made about the desserts which are superb and so healthy there’s no reason why you can’t have two.
Even without auntie K, I have been back several times to Aguaribay – the atmosphere is always fun and the service friendly and correct. In fact it’s so good, I may just give up steak.
