La Cova Fumada – Bombas

Situated in the heart of Barceloneta you’ll find this authentic tapas bar. It’s one family who started it in 1945. Now it’s the fourth generation that’s in charge. They say that they invented the famous ‘bombas de barceloneta’. We will never know in which bar the bomba has its real roots, but we do know that they are damn tasty, especially here. It’s a fried ball of mashed potatoes stuffed with minced meat and a dot of aioli with spicy sauce on top.

La cova, as it’s called by the locals, looks like it has never changed since they opened. It’s not the place where you go for a nice long table session. You just eat the daily fresh fish and vegetable dishes and leave. One reason to leave quickly is the continuing waiting people outside, desperate to get a table. But also make sure you don’t go there with your clean clothes and just-washed hair, because when you come out you might just want to change clothes and shower to get rid of the frying smell. But despite all that it’s definitely worth eating there.

The opening hours are from 09:00 to 15:00. So if you really want to be like the locals you have your fried fish and beer early in the morning. The only nights they open are Thursday and Friday. On Sunday they close all day. And the month of August the family goes on holiday like all the other people who would love to eat there, especially then.
