Sala Apolo – Life on Mars? There is in Apolo

Another great music venue in Barcelona is Sala Apolo. This legendary club stands out for being one of the oldest ballrooms in Europe. However, it began its life as a live-music venue in the early 90s and, since then, more than 15,000 artists and DJ’s have played in this historic spot in Poble-Sec.

The principal room consists of a big theatre-like stage, a huge dancefloor, balconies and four chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. They have two other dance spaces and a smoking room for smokers.

I’ve seen some great bands here, such as Wolf Alice (also at Razzmatazz), Wavves, Jungle by Night, Slowdive, Les Sueques, among many other artists. I find the quality of the presentation here, light, sound and general ambience, really very good, all adding up to a great night out.

Another thing I like about Apolo is the wide variety of music styles and diverse DJ sets they offer every night of the week. For example, on Monday’s they do rock and pop music, they call it Nasty Mondays, on Wednesdays they have Caníbal Sound System, and they do reggae and dance-hall, Thursdays are for Cupcake, and so on, right through to the weekend, where on Fridays and Saturdays you’ll find Nitsa Club which consists of deep electronic and techno music.

In 2017, they remodeled the whole structure of the club and made it much bigger. Great place to spent a night-out and enjoy a gig with mates.
