Café Younes is a Beirut institution with several branches around the city. My favourite is the one closest to Bliss Street, on Abdel Aziz Street. Younes has been selling its own roast and ground coffee since 1935, and has every variety of coffee you can think of. My favourite is the cardamom latte, made with real ground cardamom seeds, or the rose cappuccino. As well as coffee, the café has a great choice of light food, including eggs, burgers and different cakes. I especially like the zaatar or labneh omelette.
Café Younes is a great place to meet a friend, or to work, as it has fast and free internet. Upon entering, you feel like you’ve gone back to a bygone era thanks to the charming old-fashioned décor, with a long-mirrored bar, mosaic-tiled floor and small wooden tables. I like it because although it’s very centrally located, you feel like you’re away from the hustle and bustle and honking horns of the street outside. There’s also an upstairs mezzanine if you need to work or want more privacy.
