What I love about Beirut streets is that each neighborhood has its own little stories that you can only discover by mingling with the people living around.
The Virgin Mary grotto is a very small place at a dead end road between houses. It became an official praying destination, however it’s only well known among locals.
The story goes back to years ago when a woman used to go and pray in the existing grotto asking the Virgin Mary to help her. The woman struggled in her pregnancy and when her prayers were answered, she continued to pray there and told the women of her neighborhood to join her for similar reasons or just to pray. Therefore, years later they had developed the place to what we see today.
It’s a lovely place in the heart of Beirut, it’s one of a kind. And you can only reach the location on foot from Mar Mekhayel, the main street; actually the whole neighborhood is a must see!
