The first mural in Belgrade was painted in 1970 by my personal favorite Lazar Vujaklija. And then we had some amazing murals painted in the late 1980s by a group of artists commemorating the 9th Conference of the Non-Aligned Countries. This particular one, which you can find at Mileševska 57 in the smallest (and wealthiest!) municipality of Belgrade – Vračar, is perhaps my favorite mural in Belgrade that was created in the XXI century. Created by a local artist Biljana Đurđević in 2009, and inspired by a sports center that is located nearby and more specifically, the pool which she used to go to when she was a kid, the mural shows two older ladies swimming – older ladies are the most frequent visitors of the pool. 

I love this mural because the colors are bold, the shapes are soft and it’s huge! I spent the first couple of months debating in my head if it was a humongous print (the painted tiles look like strings) or a mural – it has the visual quality of an illustration that you don’t usually find painted on such a large scale but rather as an accompanying piece in a magazine. Make sure you look at it from different angles and come closer to it. My favorite detail of the mural? The ladders on the bottom part of the building.
