That view! It is amazing. The sheer simplicity of it. From the Kalemegdan fortress walls looking in the direction of Zemun you will find the Great War Island. There is nothing on it, just trees, swamps and rare bird species. And as if that was not cute enough, there is Small War Island next to it.
And when you google satellite pics of Belgrade during the night, there is nothing there. You see both riverbanks and a huge black hole in the middle, where the Great War Island is. And I just think that is amazing. Even from space, the river island looks interesting – you cannot see it.
Usually when the weather’s nice, but I say whenever, people go and sit (and often lie on – they are pretty wide) on the walls of Kalemegdan fortress and stare across the river to New Belgrade, Zemun and that bunch of trees where the Danube and Sava meet.
Especially now when the days are getting longer and the sun sets later in the evening, the walls of the fortress are the right place to get a fantastic view.
