For some reason, Mexican cocina is well accepted among Belgraders. And sometimes, it doesn’t seem like an easy task to introduce new food in the Balkans. Luckily, Mexican dishes have some similarities with the local ones.
Zapata restaurant knew how to attract more attention from an average folk – serve humongous portions of pretty good and not much expensive food. That ensures that locals don’t ask the typical questions when trying new food, like How can you eat that and not be hungry afterwards?
Zapata is always packed and my suggestion is to reserve a table before going, just in case.
Located in the vicinity of the Monument to Vuk Karadzic, its premises are warm and pleasant, the staff is friendly… A pleasant place to come and relax.
Make sure to be really hungry. Nachos are a good start, served with guacamole, green and red jalapenos, cheddar dip, variety of salsas. Just don’t take too much if you don’t want to spoil the main meal.
For meat lovers, this is heaven. Zapata steak is huge, served with various side dishes on the same plate. There is a variety of tex mex dishes (ribs, beef steaks), fajitas, quesadillas, enchiladas…
Salads are also huge and can be a stand-alone dish if you’re not that hungry. My favorite is grilled vegetables with tortilla chips and salsa of choice, but hey, I prefer veggie food. And now there’s a Zapata everywhere, with new places opened in the very Belgrade center and in defunct hotel Yugoslavia.
