Zum Starken August is a shining star beckoning all who pass it on Schönhauser Allee, with its Circus charm and promise of live shows every weekend. It is virtually impossible to walk by without peeking in and raising an eyebrow. The place hits that sweet spot of decadence without the pretentiousness or the hefty price tag that comes along with it.
I was living around the corner when it opened and it has long since remained a favourite of mine, especially to introduce people to, because there really is no other bar quite like it.
The furnishings are plush, striped and cosy and oozing with a weird mongrel mix of vaudeville with a sort of a punkish/ rock attitude ascertained by its music most evenings.
They have a great selection of rotating craft beers on tap as well as some delicious cocktails and smoothies to boot, but the real draw is for the events.
Zum Starken August is host to many performances on its small stage in the corner including, but not limited to Burlesque, bingo, tarot readings and comedy, all of which draw in significant crowds, so if you’re going for one of these, nab your spot early or be prepared to watch from outside the window!
