The numbers are shocking – according to the World Food Organisation FAO, about one third of the food produced gets lost or wasted. There are many steps we can take to minimize that problem: one is to sell fresh goods, even a day after they were produced. And that’s exactly the idea behind Ässbar.
The shop sells perfectly fine bread, sandwiches, pastries etc. for a reduced price.
Like that around 40t of food are saved from the bins of bakeries in and around Bern each year.
Since I discovered Ässbar, I haven’t been to any other bakery! It’s super centrally located in a cellar in the heart of the old town, the staff is very helpful and well informed if critical eaters like me have questions about the ingredients of each product.
And: Even if Ässbar doesn’t sell all the baked goods, they still don’t create food waste: In the evening, everything that is still on the shelves is passed on to charity organisations.
