A newspaper once wrote about this cinema: Brainstream, not mainstream! The cinema is situated in the big cultural center Reitschule – the former horse-back riding school of the municipality of Bern. The space which is now home to the Kino Reitschule used to be a horse stable, the floor is still made of cobblestones and the walls are proof of a more demanding usage than watching movies.

Most films shown in Kino Reitschule are not just for your superficial entertainment, the programme usually reflects current political discourse. Nobody working here gets a salary, the whole team does it as a hobby, as a passion for unknown movies and a way to deliberate about different topics. There’s no fixed entrance fee, pay as much as you want, but please be generous to keep the beautiful Kino Reitschule  alive – I usually give around 12 CHF, which is still much less than what you would pay in a normal cinema in Bern.  

A little pro-tip: come early so you get a space on one of the super comfy couches in the front!
