I agree – the main hall of a train station usually isn’t the kind of place to find a city’s greatest food. Bern main station is no exception. However, right next to the notorious yellow M there is one local jewel to be discovered: Mangia Mangia sells excellent NYC-style pizza slices to-go. It’s probably the freshly made dough that is prepared on-site and turned into a wonderfully bready crust before your eyes that makes this spot one of my favourite pizza places in all of the city. The concept of Mangia Mangia is refreshingly unpretentious. And since one piece fairly fills your stomach, I usually settle for a single slice of plain cheese pizza.
Of course, some conaisseurs will be arguing that a pre-baked and re-warmed pizza slice can’t play in the highest league of traditional italian pizza-making. Since Bern hat a remarkable italian community, there are plenty of more authentic options around. Pizzeria Da Nino and Da Bucolo – for example – will satisfy even the most demanding pizza critic out there.
Buon appetito!
