“Zehendermätteli” is a quiet oasis close to the city of Bern, a well maintained farm, a plant nursery, a cute little animal garden with donkeys and peacocks, an adventurous outdoor playground with tractor wrecks and trees to climb – and it might be the best place to have brunch all around the city. The variety of cheeses is massive, the Züpfe (braided bread) is legendary and some of the fruit and vegetables were collected minutes ago from the acres and nurseries of the farm.
There are tables at the greenhouse which are often reserved weeks in advance. On dry days I always find a free table though – and either join in on the brunch feast or just have a cup of coffee on the sunny terrace.
There are a couple of routes to get to “Zehendermätteli”. I recommend the path starting from Tiefenau train station through the forests of the Enge peninsula that is filled with the ruins of ancient Roman baths (ca. 30 min). After I have filled my stomach, a very shaky ferry will bring me over to the other side of the Aare river and back to public transport.
