Interview with Sofia Skioti (Athens Spotter)

Today an interview with Sofia Skioti, Spotter for our Athens cityblog.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I was born in Athens 27 years ago and have lived here ever since, with a break of a summer when I lived in Portugal and 2 years I lived in the Netherlands. I work as an online marketing executive at an online travel agency. I have travelled a lot around Europe and around Greece as well. I love traveling, swing dancing and exploring my city!

How do yo like being a Spotter?
I am excited being an Athens Spotter! When I first found the site, I thought it was exactly what I was looking for, since I prefer visiting cities with friends that live there and know the best places, rather than wandering around the crowded touristic spots. The fact that I can share my favorite spots in Athens with people that would like to get to know the real city is very interesting. Sometimes that I see foreigners in the places I go I am wondering if they are here because of my article! Sometimes though, I run out of spots or inspiration and I don’t really like that feeling.

Why Athens?
The historical past of the city is undoubtably the most important reason to visit Athens. Athens is a beautiful city, but this beauty has to be explored. So one must not rely on what’s on the surface and what is being heard about the city. Recently Athens is experiencing a crisis- together with the whole country. Through this tough situation though, new forms of civil movements emerge: artistic, socially involved, volunteer and other groups of people that try to positively influence Athens. One of these groups is the organizers of Freeday. A must do is go to one of the Friday bicycle rides with them!

What do you know about Athens what no tourist will know?
I know how Athens smells each season of the year!

Can you describe a perfect day in your city?
A perfect day would be somewhere in late May when it is almost summer and the weather is warm but not hot and the day lasts longer. I would start my day with a coffee in Bliss, a walk around Plaka, late lunch/early dinner at Ilia’s, a movie in Thisseion open-air cinema.

I would then take the street up to Karytsi square to have a drink(maybe two) at Praxitelous and then end up in Priza for the last drink(s)!
