This week’s Spotter in the spotlight is Barry Hughes from Dublin!
Barry was born in Dublin but left with his parents as a baby. He later returned to his homeland after 30 years! Barry is an incredible and unique individual. He’s the proud owner of ‘West Side Story’ on picture vinyl, even though he doesn’t have a record player. His ideal way of spending his free time is by simply relaxing and drinking a glass of Beau Rivage and listening to the soundtrack of ‘Suspiria’ turned up to eleven. Barry has been a Spotter for almost 3 years now and his tips have been extremely rewarding for many visitors who have considered or are considering a Dublin trip.
Barry loves Dublin because he loves that it’s always evolving. Parts of the city that were once crumbling and forgotten are now living, breathing, thriving spaces, it’s an ever changing canvas! Moreover, according to Barry”there’s a new generation of people, Dubs, Culchies and Blow-ins, who have taken their zest for life and channeled this energy in the form of new galleries, art and design, coffee havens”!
Here’s a small selection of Barry’s favorite spots:
The Natural Bakery
The Natural Bakery, the name of this spot says it ALL! The most wonderful place to indulge on some delicious freshly baked bread and pastries in Dublin. The ambience is perfect for you to enjoy a cup of coffee and catch up with a friend or simply sit around and relax!
The Lighthouse Cinema
The title may be a little misleading as the cinema is not located in an actual lighthouse! However, this does not take diminish its uniqueness in any way. As you walk into the cinema you will find multiple colors all around you and a minimalist décor with shapes and hues inspired by Mondrian. If that isn’t enough to grab your attention, the cinema has a variety of incredible films for your amusement, these include classics such as Fish Tank! An evening spent at a cinema is never a wasted evening in Dublin.
Ukiyo is certainly the place to be in Dublin! The friendly ambience and lovely vibes allow individuals to enjoy their time but most importantly enjoy their food! Try the delicious steak & egg burrito that will have you craving more. If you’re full from all the food and in the mood for some good old school music then go downstairs and sing to some of your old favorites in one of their karaoke rooms! Hanging out with friends surely got more enticing at this stunning spot!
The Kerlin Gallery
The Kerlin Gallery is that one spot in Dublin that you should never forget to visit. Why? Because the stunning artwork will truly touch your heart! One of Barry’s favorite exhibitions here was by Dorothy Cross. It included footage and photos of her travels on the Aran Islands, and her first time encounter with a geological oddity named ‘Poll na bPéist’ (The Wormhole), a perfect rectangular pool of Atlantic seawater ripe for cliff diving. This amazing spot truly displays some of the most astonishing art works!
The Liffey Boardwalk
A day in the city isn’t as exciting if you don’t have a place to relax and enjoy the ambience. The Liffey boardwalk is that place by the riverside that definitely makes you forget you’re in such a busy and fast-paced city! Order a cup of coffee or a drink of your choice and admire your surroundings. It’s never a dull moment when you’re with friends at this outdoor spot in Dublin!
