Atwood’s – A living room outside of one’s home

I used to live in a splendid little apartment between Cambridge and Somerville, and some days it was nice to have my solitude. Other days, I like to have the company of my friends, but sometimes I like to be alone in a crowd. You may know that type, where you want to be around the buzz of conversation, but don’t want to actually talk to anyone? On those days, if I also want a beer, I will walk a few blocks with a book to Atwood’s.

Atwood’s is a quiet little bar just outside the social hubs that are Inman and Union, and it is everything that a neighbourhood bar should be. The crowds are mellow, the beer is well selected and the menu is solid. There are other places to go if you want to shout over loud music, or cheer along to a sports team, but Atwood’s is the place that I’d go to unwind or have a deep, thoughtful conversation with an old friend. It’s my living room for those nights when I don’t want to be at home.

Later in the evenings there are folk and bluegrass bands that play here, and they are a good time. Also, there’s a patio in the back that’s one of the best kept secrets in Cambridge, a wonderful place to drink and talk under the stars.
