Got a little too indulgent at Angela’s Cafe, Santarpio’s, or another Eastie favorite? Well I have the perfect place to burn off all those calories: the East Boston Greenway! This is my favorite place to go for a leisurely walk, run, or bike ride, and also serves as a great way to get an orientation to East Boston.
The East Boston Greenway stretches from the Maverick area (practically the harbor) all the way to Constitution Beach in the Orient Heights neighborhood. It includes a biking and pedestrian trail and runs through the beautiful Bremen Street Park by the Airport T stop — which is also home to the Boston Public Library’s East Boston branch.
The portion between the Wood Island T stop and Constitution Beach runs directly next to the tracks of the Blue Line, with airport and residential property on the other side — so make sure you want to walk or ride the whole way (it only takes about 20 minutes to walk). There’s a peaceful little green area with benches about halfway between Wood Island and Constitution Beach that I love to stop at. It has some great views of the airport and harbor, with informational plaques on birds you might spot from your viewpoint. You can bird-watch and plane-watch at the same time! What a dream.
