Not to drag on the deservedly popular Mike’s Pastry, but if you’re looking for the best dessert experience in the North End after a nice Italian dinner, my recommendation for the place to go is Modern Pastry. Like Mike’s Pastry, Modern Pastry is located on Hanover Street, the main drag of the North End. Though it can get busy weekend nights, you’ll never encounter the swarm of chaos at Modern Pastry like you will at Mike’s. Here they have one easy-to-follow line, and even serviced tables if you’d like to sit down and relax.
My very Italian former boss and longtime North End resident sustained that Modern Pastry was the obvious choice over Mike’s. Though Modern’s cannoli are a lot smaller than Mike’s, there is no difference in quality. If you are not a fan of cannoli, Modern also offers a number of other pastries including cookies, cakes, pies, eclairs, biscotti, and more. Gluten-free eaters will be happy to hear that Modern also offers gluten-free whoopie pies, cookies, and muffins. Espresso drinks are also available for those who need a pick-me-up after a heavy Italian dinner.
Like many places in the North End, Modern Pastry only accepts cash, so make sure to stop by an ATM before you visit. If you’re looking for a full experience, head to the bar area in the basement for some bar food and a stiff drink before enjoying a cannolo upstairs!
